Information about Hot-Fix Rhinestone Classification.

Crystal and glass Rhinestones are classified into different types and different grades to provide consumers and manufacturers with clear distinctions regarding the quality, appearance, and performance of the stones.

This grading system helps in making informed decisions based on specific needs, budget, and desired outcomes.

Cut, Clarity and Colour influences the grading.

Most glass Rhinestone, irrespective of the price, cut and clarity still gives a beautiful effect.

Some information about this includes the following:

AB (Typically this will appear next to some colours).

The AB next to the rhinestone colour stands for Aurora Borealis, named after the Northern Lights. AB Rhinestones are made of glass and are best known for having a beautiful array of blues, greens, reds, and violets that create a dazzling display much like you see in the sky. AB Rhinestones offer shimmering rainbows of color, the unique AB coating allows the stone to change appearance subtly depending on the surface it sits on and the angle from which you see it.

Hot-Fix Rhinestones

Hot-Fix Rhinestones are used in conjunction with a crafting heat press or hand applicator. Hot-Fix Rhinestones are made with a glue covered disk on the back of the Rhinestone. This special Hot-Fix adhesive adheres the rhinestone to fabric, or other specialty heat transfer materials once heat is applied. Always refer to the application setting for your particular stones and heat press for best results. Most HotFix Rhinestones can be applied at 162°and up to 180° Celsius for 15 -20 seconds, cool, peel and press again for 10 - 12 seconds. The 2nd press sets the stones and helps remove any l lifting that may happen when removing the sticky transfer tape. (Can also be pressed on reverse side.)

I would test it at 160° first as the material you are pressing on could influence the required heat. This i found to be effective.

 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A

The terms 3A, 4A, 5A, and 6A also refer to the quality grading of some rhinestones, also made from glass or crystal. These grades are used to indicate the rhinestone's cut, clarity, color, and overall brilliance. The higher the "A" grade, the better the quality of the rhinestone. Here's a breakdown:

3A Rhinestones

  • Quality: Medium to good quality.
  • Cut: These rhinestones have a decent number of facets, typically around 12 to 14 facets, which give them a fair amount of sparkle.
  • Clarity: May have some minor imperfections or slight cloudiness, but generally good clarity.
  • Color: Colors are accurate but may not be as vibrant or consistent as higher grades.
  • Usage: Commonly used in crafts, fashion accessories, and applications where a moderate level of sparkle is sufficient.

4A Rhinestones

  • Quality: Good to very good quality.
  • Cut: These rhinestones typically have more facets, around 14 to 16, providing better brilliance and sparkle.
  • Clarity: Fewer imperfections and clearer than 3A rhinestones.
  • Color: Colors are more vibrant and consistent compared to 3A.
  • Usage: Suitable for fashion design, jewelry, and other applications where a higher level of sparkle is desired.

5A Rhinestones

  • Quality: Very high quality.
  • Cut: Usually 16 to 18 facets, leading to excellent sparkle and brilliance.
  • Clarity: Very clear with minimal to no visible imperfections.
  • Color: Consistent and vibrant, with high color accuracy.
  • Usage: Often used in high-end fashion, jewelry, and other applications requiring premium quality rhinestones.

6A Rhinestones

  • Quality: Top or premium quality.
  • Cut: These rhinestones have the highest number of facets, typically 18 or more, resulting in maximum sparkle and brilliance.
  • Clarity: Flawless or nearly flawless, with exceptional clarity.
  • Color: The colors are the most vibrant and consistent, with perfect accuracy.
  • Usage: Used in luxury fashion, jewelry, and other applications where only the best quality rhinestones are acceptable.

DMC Rhinestone

While they are more affordable, DMC lower budget rhinestones may not have the same level of brilliance and consistency as premium rhinestones. However, they are still a good option for projects where high-end rhinestones are not necessary. The facet cut can vary from 8 - 12.

There are also  acrylic and resin rhinestone, but may not have the same level of brilliance.

Korean Low Lead Rhinestone

Low Lead Content: As the name suggests, these rhinestones have a reduced lead content compared to traditional rhinestones. This makes them a safer and more environmentally friendly option, while still maintaining good clarity and sparkle.
